As of recent times, I’ve been collecting and sampling few watercolor tubes from the Winsor and Newton Cotman series. Most of which are not available in the original pack of 12 tubes.I have mauve, turquoise, viridian hue, rose permanent and rose madder hue.I love these for creating beautiful florals. This tutorial also uses a few colors from the series and they make a gorgeous combination.

For some time now, I’ve been wanting to rekindle my passion for writing snail mail.I have quite a few friends on Instagram and one of them being Judy Garcia of @iamjudyg. Judy is a dear friend, extremely supportive of my art and of the kindest people I’ve connected with.So when I received and beautiful mail from her, I was thrilled.Needless to say, I wanted to send her something that I painted.Hence, this abstract leaf watercolor pattern tutorial.

Materials you’ll need are:-

  1. Watercolor postcard paper
  2. Watercolor paints
  3. Watercolor brushes – Size 8 round and Size 3/0 round
  4. Palette

Step 1:Take a watercolor postcard paper.I used the one by Winsor and Newton Cotman.Tape it down on your table ideally by using a painter’s tape.I had run out of tape, so I used some washi tape instead. They work the same way.

Step 2:Take your size 8,round watercolor brush. You can use a size 10 or size 6 as well.Starting from the bottom left side of the paper, put down a few dabs of color.Try making the shape similar to that of a leaf.If you’re left handed, you may start from the bottom right or however convenient.I started with the color “rose permanent”.

Step 3:Continue putting down more dabs of color on the paper by changing the color and in a random pattern. So, we’re going from the bottom left upwards to the top right spreading put as we so in the middle.I added the color “mauve” and “purple”.

Dab a few spots with the color “turquoise”. You’ll notice that although I’m creating a random pattern, I’m keeping in mind the way in which leaves appear in nature.

In some of the leaves, add another color while the paint is still wet. They blend together and look fabulous when they dry.

Paint few larger leaf patterns in some places. Another technique you can use is to just dab clear water. Then load your brush with some paint and touch your brush into it while still wet.You can see and example of the effect in the image below.

Step 4:Once the paint is dry, go over it with a few more dabs to show layering. You don’t need to do this everywhere but the middle area would be ideal as the eye draws towards it more.

Keep the painting to dry completely. To quicken the process, use a hair dryer.

Step 5: Time to paint the branches! Using a size 3/0 round or any liner brush, start painting the branches.Starting from the bottom right again and connecting all the dots we applied earlier.

I used a combination of “brown”,”dark brown”and “yellow ochre” for the branches.
