Today’s DIY may seem a little complicated but I promise you it’s really easy once you get the hang of it. And as always, I’ve broken it down into simple steps that I’m sure will be easy to follow. Learn two ways to create DIY abstract art easter eggs which will make a statement that will make everyone swoon.
If you’ve been a consistent reader of this blog, you’ll know how much I adore paintings on eggs. It’s something I look forward to doing every year. I painted a landscape painting before this using watercolors which you can see here. Although we don’t celebrate Easter, I love making these to give away to friends. I’m going to show two different versions today- A simple seascape and a slightly complicated landscape.
I used gouache as my art material of choice. It dries quickly and you can create fabulous layers with it too.

Materials you’ll need are:-
- Eggs
- Gouache paints
- Paint brushes
- Washi tape or cello tape as support stand (optional)
Since I’m going to paint on the eggs, I prefer that the contents inside be put to good use.
- Wash the surface of the egg with soap and water.
- Prick a small hole on the top and bottom of the egg.
- Use a toothpick to mix the contents inside
- Blow out from one end into a bowl.
- Wash the egg again and let it dry.
THE SIMPLE SEASCAPE ABSTRACT ART EASTER EGGS
Step 1: Paint about 1/4th of the egg with a dark shade of blue. I got this color by mixing primary blue with a dash of black. I used a Simply Simmons filbert brush in the size 10. You may use any brush you have at home.
Layer on top with darker shade of blue almost bordering on black. Forget about getting it perfect because this is going to be impressionist in style and the brush strokes are going to be visible
Step 2: The color palette for the sky is light blue, light green, hint of light yellow and white. Swipe the brush horizontally back and forth to get the effect of sky. Layer the different colors with light blue being the most prominent.
For the clouds, I used a deeper shade of light blue and white. To get the effect of clouds, swirl the colors blending it towards the bottom.
Step 3: Add a few thin lines of turquoise blue to ascertain the abstract nature of the artwork. Add bits of white here and there as highlights. And that’s it! That’s all you need to do to create this simple abstract art easter egg.
THE SLIGHTLY COMPLICATED LANDSCAPEÂ ABSTRACT ART EASTER EGGS
Step 1: For the grass field, paint 1/4th of the egg a really deep shade of green. Add in a few yellow brush strokes to achieve the impression of flowers. Again, it doesn’t matter if the brush strokes show.
Paint strokes of the color grass green and a few dashes of red. Again, this is to achieve the impression of flowers in the field.
Step 2: The sky! Paint strokes of light blue and white as base layer of these abstract art easter eggs.
Add a deep shade of greyish-blue to the top part of the egg. Add a generous amount.
Take white paint on your brush and merge the base layer of light blue with the greyish-blue by moving it in circles. Blend the colors thoroughly.
Step 3:  Blend until you get the impression of a sky with a few whimsy clouds. Allow the paint to dry. The next step is to highlight a few clouds. Add specks of white by stippling your brush on the egg. Stippling means to create texture by creating small dots which in this case is done by placing the brush vertically and using the tip of the brush.
To create interest, I added a few think strokes of yellow, pink and orange. And that’s it.! Although this is the most complicated painting I’ve done of the three abstract art easter eggs, it’s my favorite.
The other version of the abstract landscape easter eggs using red, black and green as my color palette is shown in the image below. You can try and attempt simple landscapes to create fabulous easter egg creations. I’ve also put a short video on Instagram showing the entire egg. Check it out here.

So pretty! What do you use to prick a small hole in the eggs?
Thank you so much Adele. I use the tip of a sturdy knife to prick holes. In fact I did these pretty quickly, so the holes are a bit big.
These are so pretty! Love them!
