I’m going to say it again! There’s nothing better than handmade. I may have said this a million times here but that’s because I truly believe so. In this post, I’ll be teaching you to create a DIY watercolor Christmas wreath card. Give them to your friends and family.Make their day!
In recent times, I’ve been obsessed with sending out snail mail. I had no idea that it would be so much fun.And the best part is when my lovely friends reply back to me saying how much they love it. That makes my day! The DIY watercolor christmas card I’m making today is for the lovely Krisanna of “Kbykweddings“. She is a wedding planner based in Seattle and we connected on Instagram.(isn’t this platform amazing?) I love how supportive she is of the work I do and the handmade community in general. This one’s for you Kris, I hope you love it!

Materials you need for the DIY watercolor Christmas wreath card is :-
- Strathmore watercolor greeting cards
- Sennelier watercolor paints or Winsor and Newton Cotman watercolors
- Watercolor brushes- I recommend Silver black velvet brushes in no.8 round and Simply Simmons detail brush
- Palette
- Pencil
We’re going to create a half fold watercolor greeting card. You can either use ready to buy watercolor cards or make your own. To make your own cards, please follow my tutorial on Design Sponge.
Step 1: Draw a circle with pencil on the front side of the card. Very lightly!Start by painting mistletoe like leaves. Keeping the top center as your starting point, paint either in the clockwise or anti-clockwise direction. The reason I would suggest doing this is so that you have consistency while creating the wreath.
Step 2: To make the green pop even more, add a few berries randomly. This contrast is color creates a festive feel to the wreath.
Continue painting leaves and berries
Step 3: Since I’m going to send this to a friend who loves wildlife, I added two sweet cardinals in the bottom center of the wreath. I sketched out the outline of the birds first. Then, using a detail brush I painted the cardinals.
The colors I used for the cardinals
- Bright red
- Vermillion red and naples yellow deep mix
- Ivory black
Step 4: Making it personal! A hand lettered word or two makes a card so much more personal. I decided to use the word “rejoice” because it’s so thoughtful.
I sketched out the word in pencil first making sure the alignment is right. Using the detail brush and watercolor calligraphy, I Â painted the words. As a general rule, the upstrokes need to be thin and downstrokes thick.
Rub the pencil strokes to clean up the painting. Create a matching envelope(I’ll be doing a tutorial on this soon). And you’re done!
