I love working with graphite pencils. I can easily call it my favorite medium to draw. Although I love experimenting and trying out new mediums and techniques, I will always be partial to graphite. There is something absolutely magical when layers and layers of beautiful, subtle grays are overlapped to form realistic, black and white gorgeousness. In this post, I have used the technique of teaming up graphite with Faber Castell polychromos colored pencils to create a mixed media artwork titled “Decay“.  Unlike always, this post does not include a tutorial but I’m planning on making a series of beginner lessons in graphite drawings in the year 2015. So if you like what I’ve done here, be sure to subscribe so that you can get your free* lessons on graphite drawings directly to your inbox. Have fun looking at my little walkthrough.

The materials I’ve used are Tombow Mono and Staedtler Lumograph pencils, Tombow mono eraser, Smooth bristol paper, FC polychromos,Watercolor round brush and White gel pen. About the materials in detail,
1.Tombow pencils are hands down one of the best pencils I’ve used for graphite drawings. They give
beautiful layers and their darks are brilliant. Coming in a close second are Staedtler Mars Lumographs but one of the things that make Tombow slightly better is its staedfastness. It lays so effortlessly on paper.
2.Tombow Mono eraser is a thin and absolutely pointy beraser which can make the best of erasing effortlessly. It helps in creating brilliant highlights in the tiniest of places. They come in both round and rectangular shapes.
3.Smooth Bristol paper is an absolutely smooth paper without texture which can produce fabulous results. It can help in creating lots of layers. The only drawback I see with this is that it doesnot take multiple erasing very well.
4.Watercolor round brush is for blending and smoothening the sharp pencil lines. I prefer them over pencil stumps as they create soft edges and are easy to work with.
5. FC polychromos are oil based colored pencil which lay down brilliantly. It has brilliant layering capabilities and can create the richest hues on paper.
6.White gel pen is for highlights.

Here is what the finished product looks like. I love the idea of mixing two mediums together and really like how this turned out.
